B.Sc (Data Science and Applications)
For many, the thought of balancing work, education, and parenting would seem like an insurmountable challenge. But for Ramees Thattarath, it’s simply another day. Originally from Kochi, Kerala, Ramees has spent nearly a decade as an Android Developer. A former student of the ECE department at Government Engineering College, Trichur, he now finds himself, nine years later, reaching for something new—something current, challenging, and filled with potential.
“I wanted to elevate my environment, explore new roles, and the best way forward was to learn and integrate current technologies,” he shares. A friend told him about the IITM BS Degree in Data Science and Applications, and the fact that it was offered by IIT Madras immediately caught his attention. “I have always liked Mathematics. Furthermore, this IIT Madras program not only provided the prestigious brand value but also equipped us with highly sought-after skills in statistics and data science, which are in high demand across various industries.”
Ramees admits he was most excited to begin the software and web development aspects of this degree. Despite his experience in the industry as an android developer, web applications were uncharted waters for him.
“I was always open to learning new things, but this degree truly reshaped the way I think about my own field,” Ramees says with conviction. “Even after being in software for all these years, courses like SC opened my eyes to the new depths one could explore. There is always something more to learn.”
The MAD 1 and MAD 2 projects gave him hands-on experience, and he’s confident enough to visualise and build web applications. On the other hand, his journey in the data science front has only begun, yet going steadily. “Courses like MLF, MLT, and MLP provide a structured climb. You learn and then you apply.”
For Ramees, 2021 was a year of double beginnings: he started his degree while simultaneously embracing the new role of fatherhood. With offshore clients, a packed schedule, and a toddler at home, he hasn’t yet had the chance to dive into the co-curricular ecosystem or attend Paradox, but he hopes to do so someday. “I am looking forward to attending Paradox before I graduate, he says with a smile.”
When asked what makes this degree stand out, he immediately and enthusiastically points to its inclusivity.
“This degree is open to people of every background. Whether you’re a student, a working professional, or someone who has retired for a long time now – this program works around your life.”
He acknowledges that the teaching, the exam pattern, and the overall structure of the program is designed to build actual competence – to test your learning, not memory.
Based on his years of industry experience, Ramees vouches for the fact that the students from this degree would be a lot more competent than many.
Looking ahead, Ramees plans to finish this degree with flying colours. Meanwhile, he has already started participating in Kaggle competitions to further hone his data analysis skills. His goal is to transition into the data science domain, armed not just with the right tools but with a deep understanding as well.
From building Android apps to exploring the world of AI, Ramees is evolving with each passing step. To those considering this path, he has a clear message – “If you are curious and want to learn something new and build something meaningful, this is the right path for you. You’ll grow, both in theory and practice.”
